EMDR Therapy for PTSD and Trauma in Las Vegas

Traumatic experiences can affect how we feel, think, and respond to everyday situations. For some people, those experiences continue to contribute to anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional distress, and difficulty feeling safe long after the event has passed.

At Stepping Points Psychiatry, we offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for individuals experiencing trauma related symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Las Vegas and Summerlin, Nevada.

EMDR is a structured, evidence based psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories. Treatment involves identifying experiences connected to current symptoms and using guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, as part of a carefully planned therapeutic process.

Our approach emphasizes safety, individualized treatment planning, and working at a pace appropriate for each patient's needs. EMDR may be incorporated into a broader mental health treatment plan when clinically appropriate.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy designed to help individuals process distressing memories and reduce symptoms associated with traumatic experiences.

EMDR therapy follows eight phases, beginning with a review of your history, treatment planning, and preparation. Your therapist will work with you to identify distressing experiences, develop coping skills, and establish a sense of safety before beginning memory reprocessing.

During the reprocessing phases, your therapist may guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation, such as side to side eye movements, alternating sounds, or gentle tapping, while you briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory.

The goal is to reduce the emotional distress associated with traumatic memories and support healthier beliefs about yourself and your experiences.

EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a traumatic event aloud. Treatment progresses according to your individual needs, readiness, and clinical response.

The number of sessions varies depending on your history, symptoms, and treatment goals. Your provider will discuss what to expect and monitor your progress throughout treatment.

Who Can Benefit From EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy may be appropriate for individuals experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or ongoing emotional distress related to traumatic experiences.

At Stepping Points Psychiatry, we recognize that trauma can affect people differently. Some individuals experience intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, or heightened anxiety. Others may struggle with negative beliefs about themselves, emotional regulation, or difficulty feeling safe in everyday situations.

EMDR may be considered for people experiencing:

  • PTSD following traumatic experiences

  • Distressing memories related to accidents, violence, or abuse

  • Intrusive memories, nightmares, or trauma related avoidance

  • Persistent negative beliefs associated with traumatic experiences

  • Emotional distress following difficult or overwhelming events

EMDR is an established treatment for PTSD, although its effectiveness for other conditions varies and requires individualized clinical consideration.

Before beginning treatment, your provider will assess your symptoms, treatment history, current stability, and readiness for trauma focused therapy. Not every patient needs EMDR, and alternative treatments may be recommended when clinically appropriate.

Our goal is to help patients explore appropriate, evidence based treatment options in a supportive and respectful environment.
